Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Where Gold Meets Silver

Park Overview

Located in the clouds of southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga is the country’s smallest national park but one of its most diverse. It forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. The park is uniquely famous for being the only place in Uganda where you can track both the Mountain Gorilla and the Golden Monkey.

Core Geography

• The Three Volcanoes: The park is defined by three extinct volcanoes:

  1. Mount Muhabura (4,127 m): The highest peak with a crater lake at the top.

  2. Mount Sabyinyo (3,669 m): Famous for its jagged peaks where the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet.

  3. Mount Gahinga (3,474 m): Features a swamp-filled crater and is the easiest to hike.

• Habitat: The landscape consists of montane forest, bamboo belts, and alpine moorland.

Primary Wildlife and Attractions

The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family

Mgahinga is home to a single habituated gorilla group, the Nyakagezi family. This group was once known for crossing borders into Rwanda and Congo, but it has remained permanently in Mgahinga for several years.

• Trekking Experience: Permits are limited to 8 people per day. The trek starts at the Ntebeko Visitor Center and can take between 2 to 6 hours.

Rare Golden Monkeys

Mgahinga is the only park in Uganda where these "old world" monkeys can be tracked. They are easily distinguished by their bright orange-gold fur and primarily inhabit the bamboo forests.

Other Fauna and Flora

• Mammals: Over 76 mammal species have been recorded, including forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, and black-fronted duikers. However, these are often elusive due to the thick forest cover.

• Birds: A paradise for birders with over 180 species, including 14 Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori Turaco, Kivu Ground Thrush, and Regal Sunbird.

1. Gorilla Trekking: The park's main highlight, offering an intimate 1-hour encounter with the mountain gorillas.

2. Golden Monkey Tracking: A playful and faster-paced alternative to gorilla trekking.

3. Volcano Hiking: Full-day climbs to the summits of Muhabura, Sabyinyo, or Gahinga.

4. The Batwa Trail: A cultural experience led by the indigenous Batwa people. They demonstrate traditional hunting skills, medicinal plant use, and perform music inside the sacred Garama Cave (a 342m long cave formerly used as a council chamber).

5. Bird Watching: Best done along the "Buffalo Wall" and the swampy areas near the park edges.

Traveler Logistics

Best Time to Visit

• Dry Season (June–August & December–February): Ideal for trekking and volcano hiking as trails are less slippery.

• Wet Season (March–May & September–November): Excellent for bird watching and lush photography. Gorillas may also be easier to find as they stay on lower slopes where food is abundant.

How to Get There

• By Road: 8–10 hours from Kampala or approximately 6 hours from Kigali, Rwanda (via the Cyanika border).

• By Air: Daily flights are available from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip, followed by a short drive to the park.
