Exploring Lake Mburo National Park

A Compact Gem of Biodiversity

Lake Mburo National Park is a unique destination in Uganda, offering a distinct landscape compared to other parks. It is characterized by acacia woodlands, wetlands, and several lakes. Notably, while elephants are not found here, the park is home to a robust population of buffaloes and the recently reintroduced Rothschild’s giraffes.

Diverse Wildlife and Avian Life

The park is a sanctuary for various species, including:

  • Mammals: Impalas (unique to this park in Uganda), zebras, elands, topis, buffaloes, and Rothschild’s giraffes. Other sightings include oribi, duiker, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, and hippo.

  • Predators: Leopards are healthy in number here but are mostly active at night. Spotted hyenas, genets, and porcupines are also present.

  • Birding: With over 310 bird species, it is a top site for acacia-dwelling birds. The park’s swamps host rare papyrus specialists like the Papyrus Gonolek and the Blue-headed Coucal. Other notable residents include the African Finfoot, Black-collared Barbet, and Bare-faced Go-away bird.

Adventure and Activities

Safari on Wheels and Foot

  • Day Game Drives: Multiple trails allow visitors to view wildlife like zebras and impalas while taking in the varied vegetation and landscape.

  • Night Game Drives: Starting at 7:00 PM and lasting roughly 3 hours, these guided drives use spotlights to find elusive nocturnal animals like leopards and bushbabies.

  • Guided Nature Walks: One of the few parks where you can explore on foot. Early morning walks (6:30 AM/7:00 AM) take you to areas like the Eland Track or the Rwonyo salt lick, offering a quiet, close-up view of the animals.

Water and Specialized Safaris

  • Boat Cruises: Scheduled and private trips on Lake Mburo provide sightings of crocodiles, hippos, and water birds such as kingfishers and the African Fish Eagle.

  • Horseback Safaris: A truly unique way to see the wild. Riding through the park on well-trained horses allows you to get remarkably close to herds of zebras and antelopes without the sound of an engine.

  • Cycling Safaris: Guided by armed rangers, cycling tours can last from one hour to several. The flat valleys make for easier riding and excellent wildlife visibility.

Weather and Climate

Lake Mburo enjoys a mild climate:

  • Temperatures: Daytime averages are around 27°C (81°F), with nights cooling down to 14°C (57°F).

  • Seasons: While rain can occur anytime, the driest months are June, July, and December through February. The two wet seasons run from March to May and September to November.
